We recently asked Baker Donelson to tell us more about their women’s ERG (employee resource group) after they gave a presentation on their program model at an ERG Collaborative meeting. Here’s a summary of how Baker Donelson is working to promote women into leadership positions within their firm.
The Baker Donelson Women’s Initiative is committed to creating an environment where female attorneys thrive, increasing the Firm’s ability to provide unparalleled client service. We strive to meet this goal through the tenets of our mission statement:
- Secure leadership roles for women;
- Recruit and retain the best female attorneys in the country;
- Create diverse client service teams; and
- Mentor the next generation of women leaders.
Women represent more than 36 percent of Baker Donelson’s attorneys compared to the national average of 33.89 percent. Female attorneys serve as leaders across the Firm and in the communities we serve. Currently, women serve as President and COO, on the Board of Directors, as office managing shareholders, and as practice group and committee chairs. Women lead numerous administrative departments within the Firm as well including, Knowledge Management, Recruiting and Professional Development. The commitment of Baker Donelson’s women attorneys reaches well beyond the Firm. Many serve in positions of leadership in their communities and industries, including the president of the American Bar Association (ABA), the past chair of the ABA Section of Litigation, the chair of the American Health Lawyers Association’s (AHLA) Women’s Leadership Council, past presidents of AHLA and many more.
Baker Donelson believes that encouraging and supporting women leaders ensures a better Firm to serve our clients and our communities. For the past y ear, the Women’s Initiative worked with the Firm’s leaders on ways to encourage confidence in the women they lead and the importance of sponsorship. We shared examples and best practices on how they could best support the women in their practice groups or offices through active listening, ensuring fair pay, encouraging women to take risks and positioning women for leadership or high profile roles.
We’re proud of the following recognitions of our successes:
- Gold Standard Certification by WILEF
- VAULT 2017 #6 law firm for “Diversity for Women”
- One of FORTUNE Magazine’s “Best Workplaces for Women” and “50 Best Workplaces for Parents” in 2016
- Ranked 26th on Fatherly’s “Best Places to Work for New Dads”
- Achieved a score of 100 in the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index
